Ascension News and Comments

Worship with us in the season of Pentecost
Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.
Jesus' parable about two sons who don't do what they say reveals surprises in the reign of God, such as prostitutes and tax collectors going before others into God's kingdom. In the reading from Ezekiel the people question whether the ways of the Lord are unfair; instead they are to repent and turn to the Lord. Paul urges us to look to Christ as a model of humility, looking to the interests of others above our own. Nourished by the broken bread and shared cup, we offer our lives for the sake of our needy world.
Ezekiel 18:1–4, 25–32
Psalm 25:1–9
Philippians 2:1–13
Matthew 21:23–32
The Death Penalty: An Issue For Moral Deliberation
Open Scripture. Join the conversation.
Christians thinking about the death penalty should distinguish between proclamation of the gospel and recommendation of specific public policies. We enter the public realm with humility, in the spirit of "Come, let us reason together (Isaiah 1:18a), with all people. We need carefully and thoughtfully to consider the evidence, the experience, and the arguments. As Christians we must examine the biblical record and clearly lift up the Word of Good News. Blessing of the Animals
 Sunday, October 5
Each fall, Ascension Lutheran Church hosts a special ceremony called the Blessing of the Animals. The custom of blessing animals is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi's love for all creatures. St. Francis, whose feast day is October 4th, wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God's living things. "All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures." The proud owners of household pets and even stuffed animals bring each of them forward to be blessed by name. This year, the event will take place during the 10:00 a.m. worship in the sanctuary of the church on Sunday, October 5th. All God’s creatures from the community are invited to bring their special humans to this special service in the sanctuary of the church. Please join us in your favorite cage or wearing your finest leash!

Organ Renovation Project

Phase I of the organ restoration is progressing on schedule. This phase addresses the issues of the organ console and restoration of the windchests, reservoirs and pipework. As you see above, the console has been completely disassembled and only the shell remains. The previous interior mechanisms of the console will be replaced with solid state components, bringing the organ console to present day acceptable standards. Our existing keyboards of valuable English Ivory will be retained in the new solid state console. It will also add 32’ digital extensions to the pedal division, providing a deep, rich sound; MIDI; playback capability; and 99 levels of piston memory. Pipes in the Swell and Positiv divisions, located in the south chambers, have been removed for refurbishing of the pipes and windchests.
While the pipes are out of the chamber, new lighting has been installed in the south pipe chamber and the damaged drywall from previous water leaks has been repaired.
